Tourism leaders say immediate future is “a little scary”

Due to the economic state of this country and the depleted amount of tourism expected in Biloxi that is expected to result, the Taxi service in Biloxi is projected to be down slightly in 2009.

To make matters worse, AirTran has announced that they are suspending all service into the Biloxi-Gulport international airport and this alone should cut volume of taxi service in the area. This could reduce the amount of tourists on the east coast by hundereds if not thousands. To read more CLICK HERE.

Almost half of local taxi companies rely on the airport for their business and most local cab companies are expecting to drop as much as 40%. However most cab company owners have remained positive that they will be able to weather the storm. This author strongly agrees and I believe that tourism as well as taxi volume will rebound dramatically once the perceived crisis ends.

Bus instead of taxi while in Biloxi?

Got a good question about if visitors to Biloxi should utilize taxis or the buses/shuttles provided by the casinos and public transportation.

If you are in a rush you always want to go the taxi route. However, if you have additional time and do a little plan ahead you can get around to many of the casinos via shuttles. These can be very cheap and even free.

The current types of shuttles offered from the casinos and casino areas are:

Casino Hopper – This small shuttle provides service to casinos in casino row and also to the back bay. This shuttle comes about every 20-30 minutes and only costs $1.

City Bus – City bus provided by Coast Transit Authority can provide transportation to Gulfport casinos and also casinos off the main strip.

Casino Shuttle – Some casinos will have shuttle that will pick you up from your hotel. Call casino to see availability.
